The Faculty of Global Processes

 

General information


About the Department
The accelerating pace of globalization generates a need for new approaches to training specialists in international political and economic relations on global and regional levels.
We are aimed at preparing highly-qualified competitive specialists in international relations. Our courses provide the students with theoretical framework in a wide range of subjects enabling them to monitor and assess global risks and make forecasts for the future.
Our programs are designed to equip students with the knowledge and capabilities required by employers whilst at the same time providing a learning and social environment which is almost unrivalled in its quality and diversity.

Academics
The academic supervisor of the Faculty is Igor I. Abilgaziyev, full professor, Doctor in History, Chief Federal Inspector of Moscow in the Administration of Federation Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Central Federal District of the Russian Federation.
The Dean of the Faculty is Ilya V. Ilyin, associate professor, PhD in Geology and Mineralogy.

Tuition is mainly based on classical traditions however due to modern trends our university encompasses and promotes  innovative teaching methods and techniques (case studies, role plays, round tables, workshops, etc).

Teaching is provided by in-house Faculty members and leading professors as well as guest lecturers from the Russian Academy for Foreign Trade, Moscow State Institute of International Relations (University), the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The curriculum includes the following subjects:

1)    Humanities, Social and Economic sciences 
2)    Mathematics and Exact sciences
3)    Modern languages (language proficiency is assessed by ESOL exams)
4)    Core curriculum (Geopolitics, Global Studies)
5)    Specialization courses

To teach critical thinking and public speaking skills, to develop students’ competence in a wide range of political, economic and cultural issues, the Faculty runs regular sessions for members of students’ political club “Globus” (the “Globe”) with the participation of preeminent expert guests. Students are also welcome to attend additional courses at other faculties of MSU.
Male students are given the opportunity to enroll for Reserve Officer Training Department. Upon successful course completion students receive a military rank.

Practice work placements
Third and fourth-year students are offered to gain work experience and develop practical skills and competencies that will be required in their profession at the Administration of the President of RF, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, the Central Bank and other federal governing bodies, as well as in relevant State Duma committees, the Federation Council of Russia, research and development departments of the Academy of Science, branches of international organizations in Russia, etc.
Students can participate in students’ exchange programs with the leading universities and scientific centers worldwide.

Faculty Departments

Department of Geopolitics and Diplomacy
The department prepares specialists in the sphere of international (political) relations and geopolitics. Graduates specialize in the practical side of Diplomatic Service work. Graduates have employment opportunities in governmental and inter-governmental organizations and nonprofit organizations.

Department of Global Economics and Management
Department prepares highly qualified specialists who combine fundamental theoretical knowledge of foreign relations with practical realization of the processes in global economics and of economic policy of states.

Courses that are offered by the department are oriented to meet the employers’ needs.
Students are taught business and economic aspects of foreign languages.
Graduates are in demand in various transnational companies, in Russian financial companies, in the Ministry of Finance or the Ministry of Economic Development and trade of the Russian Federation, in other Ministries and offices of the Russian Federation, in consulting companies and audit firms, in international financial organizations and in the Mass Media interested in problems of global economics.

International activities

To improve language skills and to provide students with an experience of the international communication the Faculty provides a wide range of various programs. Among them there are International Students’ Conferences and cultural exchange programs. Moreover, the Faculty offers its students a possibility to participate in conferences organized by universities all around the globe and by such organizations as UNESCO.

In October 2009 jointly with Goethe University, Frankfurt-am-Main, the Faculty organized XX Russian-German Students’ Conference. A lot of topics dedicated to the problems of transactional economics in Russia and countries of Eastern and Central Europe were on the conference agenda.     

Scientific Projects and Publications.

Global Studies and globalistics in their modern state accumulated enormous scientific data during its 40-year existence. The current goal of the Faculty is to analyze and systemize this data.

The Faculty carries out a wide range of scientific projects in this sphere. With the help of the Faculty were created an Encyclopedic Dictionary of Globalistics  (School of Global Studies) and Globolistics Encyclopedia.  Also the Faculty has several book series that are published yearly including “Global Studies: the questions of scientific research and teaching” and “Students’ Almanac Globe”. The latter gives an opportunity for researches in the sphere of Global Studies not only for scientists but for young scholars as well. The Faculty introduces new methods of teaching Global Studies as a discipline. For this purpose the Faculty is working at creating a unique manual series on Global Studies. The first manual titled “Introduction to the Global Ecology” has already been published.

Who is Who and What is What in Globalistics?


The main scientific project that the Faculty is working on is “Who is Who and What is What in Globalistics?” The Faculty has set a goal to create a unique database that will embrace all the required information about Global Studies:

•    scientists who have contributed to the development of globalistics and global studies, specialists in the area
•    organizations, institutions, centers, faculties and departments specifically focused on global processes and problems
•    periodicals dealing with global issues
•    conferences, congresses, forums, etc.

It is possible, desirable and promising to use the project’s Internet portal (www.globalistics.org) as a medium for the following activities:

•    analysis and discussion of global processes and events online;
•    interdisciplinary communication;
•    maintaining personal blogs by scientists and specialists;

International Scientific Congress «Globalistics-2009: a Way Out of the Global Crisis and Models of a New World Order». 20-23 May 2009, Moscow.

The Faculty hosted the International Scientific Congress “Globalistics-2009”.  It was the first and the most significant event devoted to all aspects of Globalization in Eurasia and was attended by more than 500 scholars from 25 countries of Europe, Asia and the United States. The agenda of the conference included discussions on Philosophy of Global Studies, Political Global Studies and International Affairs, a Person In a Globalizing World, Global Studies at Universities and Schools, Economic Aspects of Globalization, Geo-ecology and Globalization, Forecast and Modeling, Russia in a Globalizing World.

In accordance with the Congress’s decisions we have established the International Global Research Association (IGRA) to conduct and coordinate scientific research and application projects. IGRA is co-founded by the Scientific and Technological Corporation “Intellectual Systems”, the Russian Philosophic Society and the Faculty of Global Processes, Lomonosov Moscow State University.
